Job Description

A Gastroenterology Technician (or Gastro Tech) assists in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, primarily by supporting physicians during endoscopic procedures, such as colonoscopies, upper endoscopies (EGD), and other procedures related to the digestive system.

Key Responsibilities of a Gastro Technician:

  1. Assisting with Procedures: Prepare patients for endoscopic and other GI procedures. Assist gastroenterologists by handing them tools and instruments, positioning patients, and ensuring all necessary equipment is ready.
  2. Operating Equipment: Set up, operate, and maintain specialized GI equipment such as endoscopes, biopsy forceps, and suction devices. Gastro techs are also responsible for troubleshooting equipment issues and ensuring everything is properly sterilized.
  3. Patient Preparation and Care: Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the process, answering questions, and ensuring comfort. Gastro techs also help position patients correctly on the examination table and assist with sedation management.
  4. Sterilization and Cleaning: Properly clean and sterilize endoscopes and other instruments to prevent infection. Ensure that all tools and environments adhere to hygiene and safety standards.
  5. Specimen Collection and Handling: Collect biopsy specimens and ensure proper labeling and handling for laboratory analysis.
  6. Monitoring Patient Condition: Observe patients during procedures and report any changes in condition to the physician or nurse. Post-procedure, they help monitor the patient as they recover from sedation.
  7. Administrative Tasks: Record patient information, procedure details, and instrument usage in medical records. Gastro techs may also assist in scheduling procedures and maintaining supply inventories.

Skills and Qualities:

  • Attention to Detail: Gastro techs must be thorough, especially when cleaning and sterilizing equipment, to prevent infection and ensure patient safety.
  • Manual Dexterity: The ability to skillfully handle and operate complex medical instruments and equipment is essential.
  • Interpersonal Skills: They need to provide patient care with empathy, communicate clearly with both patients and medical staff, and help ease any patient anxiety about the procedure.
  • Technical Knowledge: Gastro techs must have a solid understanding of GI anatomy and the functioning of medical devices used in gastroenterology.

Education and Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED: A basic requirement for the role.
  • Specialized Training or Certificate Program: Most gastro techs complete a certificate program in endoscopy or gastroenterology technology, which includes training in operating room procedures, GI anatomy, and instrument handling.
  • CPR and BLS Certification: Required to assist in emergencies.
  • Optional Certification: Some technicians may obtain certification through bodies like the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA), which offers the GI Technical Specialist (GTS) credential.

Work Environment:

Gastroenterology technicians typically work in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and specialty clinics that perform GI procedures. They may work full-time, part-time, or on a per-procedure basis. The role often involves standing for long periods, working in sterile environments, and being part of a fast-paced healthcare team.

This career offers a mix of patient interaction, technical responsibilities, and hands-on medical experience, making it a key role in gastroenterology care.
